This is a solution for TV broadcasting platform to deliver
contents through the Internet and via an Over-the-top (OTT)
device connected to a TV set. It is also commonly referred
to as Internet-TV.
Comparing to traditional terrestrial broadcasting (Overthe-air),
OTT broadcasting has very little geographical
limitations. To offer the service, it does not need a license
from the government. Two-way interaction between user
and the content source is supported. This new on-demand
broadcasting (or unicasting) approach for TV content
delivery has opened up many new business opportunities.
For example, TV commercials can be highly customised to
suit the needs of viewers, resulting in the best promotional
effect. In Nov 2014, this solution was used by Hong Kong
Television Network Limited (HKTV) to launch its online TV
services in Hong Kong.
