BOCHK IT Green Solutions
Bank of China (Hong Kong) ("BOCHK") is committed to improving the social and environmental well-being of the community in line with the Bank's Corporate Social Responsibility Policy. Since 2002, BOCHK has implemented a series of IT solutions to reduce energy consumption and carbon emission, with the following results:
(1) Use of e-document and e-statement helped reduce paper use of 350 million pages (or 1,613 tons) annually;
(2) Through the data centre cooling system enhancement, server virtualisation and completion of phase 1 of the 4-phased hardware refreshment, the Bank's annual electricity consumption has been reduced by 1.67 million kWh, resulting in the reduction of CO2 emissions by 1,169 tons; and
(3) With their “Procurement Policy for Sustainable Development” in place, BOCHK has managed their suppliers more effectively by reviewing the recycled content and packaging of their products and checking whether environmental certification has been obtained.

“BOCHK IT Green Solutions” reduces direct environmental impact of the business by using resources more efficiently and effectively. It is, in the judges’ opinion, a well balanced comprehensive approach. The program aims to reduce paper use by employing electronic applications; use resources more efficiently through technology refresh and virtualisation; and reduce energy consumption through an improved cooling system to its server’s facilities.
The judges were impressed by its high impact Green ICT initiatives with well-defined objectives. ICT was deployed intelligently without negative impact on its operation. Savings made were supported by robust data collected objectively and scientifically. It is a brilliant initiative professionally executed and a well deserved award winner.
